What does NIL mean?

In the simplest of terms, Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) is a term that describes the means through which college athletes are allowed to recieve financial compensation. NIL refers to the use of an athelete's name, image, and likeness through marketing and promotional endeavors.

Can high school students get NIL deals?

The NCAA will not penalize high school athletes if they decide to cash in on autographs or endorsements. However, students may run into trouble and risk their high school eligibility if they violate their high school's or high school association's rules.

Do you pay taxes on NIL money?

Generally, athletes will be considered independent contractors by the companies who sigh them to NIL deals. Most, if not all payments an NCAA athlete receives will have no income taxes withheld, which means if the payment is taxable, tax will be due when the athlete's tax return is filed.

Is there a limit on how many NIL deals can be made?

No, there is no limit on how many deals can be made. Nor a limit on how much money or compensation.

Can student athletes endorse alcohol in NIL deal?

Yes, if the student is 21 years of age.

Can student athletes wear their college uniform in a NIL deal?

Athletes cannot use school intellectual property, facilities or uniforms in NIL activities. But some universities have exceptions to the rule.

Can individuals enter into NIL agreements with boosters?

Yes, provided the activity is in accordance with state laws and school policy, is not an impermissible inducement and it does not constitute pay-for-play.

Can student athletes endorse products during games?

Absolutely not. Then comes in the terminology of pay for play. Paying or endorsing a company during playing time is a major violation of the NCAA.
